Intelligent quote of the day

Twenty years after the death of Herbert Armstrong and the churches of God have gone to hell in a handbasket. Not only have they not solved one single problem, but they have new ones all the time.
There are plenty of mentally ill ministers in the churches of God: Some with depression, some with Bipolar Disease, a few with schizophrenia. The external evidence is that a number of them have committed suicide and 90% of all suicides are the result of mental illness. One minister gives sermons wherein he says he is depressed and then says in another place he isn’t depressed.
Mental illness is a physiologically linked trait, often with predispositions running in families. Therefore, one would expect that families of ministers who have mental illness will themselves have mental illnesses. Considering the fact that the Worldwide Church of God attracted unstable people, it is possible that Ambassador College represented the shallow end of the gene pool when it comes to mental illness.
David Pack needs to remain silent, for it is not mental illness from which he suffers, but a mental disorder: He seems to have the personality disorder of narcissism—an aspect of character which seems to afflict all the leaders of the churches of God.
Whereas, there is good reason for mental illnesses which are often treatable, there is no good reason for narcissism, for there is no physiological nor genetic components apparent in the disorder. Furthermore, while it is not illegal to be a narcissist [or even a psychopath, for that matter], it is a sin. Based on the royal law of love, narcissism is excluded because it is basically a lack of empathy and, hence, means that a person who has chosen the dark path of being an empty shell who considers himself the center of the Universe, can have no love for others.
This means, if you are a purist, that people like David Pack have absolutely no fruit of the Holy Spirit, and hence, have never repented or ever been converted.
Of course, there is another possibility: They’ve committed the unpardonable sin.
While alcoholism is not a mental illness per se, it is an affliction which seems inherent within most of the ministers of the churches of God, particularly the leaders. There is little worse than being under the domination of an alcoholic narcissist, outside of being under the domination of a practicing alcoholic psychopath. Most of us have lived wretched lives in the churches of God because of the alcoholic narcissists who lead the churches of God.
We start with Herbert Armstrong, with his Harvey’s Bristol Creme and move on to Garnter Ted Armstrong. There was David Jon Hill. There is today, Gerald Flurry. It is surprising just how many practicing alcoholics there are currently among the ministers in the churches of God.
They won’t make it into the Kingdom of God, of course, if there is one shred of credibility to Scripture. You might not believe in the Bible any longer, but you can believe in the wretched lives lived by those who are controlled by alcoholics in power. They are everywhere. Just look for people who complain about hypoglycemia. It’s not a 100% indicator that the person is in the final stages of alcoholism—the last of which is death—but, by and large, it is a very good indicator. Another good indicator is that alcohol is supposed to relax people. If you find your minister has all kinds of energy after taking a drink, look out: There’s something wrong with his liver and the alcohol is transformed by his body chemistry into toxic poisons—he is an alcoholic.
So after 20 years, none of the problems of the churches of God have been resolved and the problems they had are getting worse. The narcissists are still narcissists. The psychopaths are still psychopaths. The practicing alcoholics are still practicing alcoholics. The mentally ill in the church have had not one shred of help.
It is a sick dysfunctional environment which needs a major cleaning out. As it stands, the ministers are totally unqualified to lead anyone anywhere but perdition.
---Douglas Becker, who discusses the sad state of mental health of both ministers and members of the various Armstrongite Churches of God on Gary Scott's XCG blogsite.

Hot topic! Sex in Heaven???

Neotherm, former Jesus Loves Fellowship poster and current repliant to Gavin Rumney's Ambassador Watch blog gave his 2 cents on his views on sex, love and the afterlife on JLF a couple years ago. A very hot and even an explosively argumentitive topic, especially for conservative evangelicals:
Our ultimate destiny is to become fully human and glorified as God intended. C.S. Lewis noted that we would retain our gender and that we would be able to use all of our human qualities in a much more effective and enlightened way. Whywould we gain so much experience and expertise in being male and female, only to have these fundamental properties go away? He stops short of speculating that there will be actual physical relations but speculated that there would be some relationship that would exceed what we know as humans.
Hank Hanegraaf in his outstanding book "Ressurection" say much the same thing. But once again does not suggest actual physical relations would take place.
The fact these men shy away from physical aspects, I believe is cultural rather than theological. If any theologian ever advocated the idea of actual physical relations, he would be ridden out of town on a rail, given the state of our cultural views on sex. In our fallen world, all kinds of weapons have been used in the war between men and women, including sex. So sex has become highly politicized and many take an unreasonable view towards it.
Personally, I do not see any reason why there would not be a physical dimension to a gender based spiritual relationship. God made us male and female for eternity and for some reason.
I don not believe as Christ stated, that there will be marriage or reproductuon in the New Heavens and New Earth. I have noted that it is popular for Christian writers to extend this proscription also to sexual relations. But Christ did not say that. He said precisely that people would not marry or be given in marriage. Sex has other aspects beyond simple reproduction.
Marriage among humans is an institution designed to accomodate and make possible reproduction and family life. In the New Heavens and New Earth, it is easy to see how marriage would fall into disuse. In this world marriage is a fallen institution like other institutions and in the next world it is uneeded.
It believe it is likely that sex will be glorified in the New Heavens and New Earth like all other human capabilities and qualities.

...and to that I say Amen!!! It is time for the Christian Church of all quarters to grow up (and I know I have angered some because of what I said) but that is my story and I'm sticking to it!

Oh the memories of being in the cult of Armstrongism

Ahh! Re-live the good ole days being an Armstrongite cultist! Taking orders in pure unquestioned obedience, learn how to manipulate people, demand peoples submission over respect, lose your indiviudality, celebrate uniformity over unity and other shenanigans that were all about being a cult. Relive these days by watching this video courtesy by YouTube.com and then you realize, "Hey, I am NOW living in the good ole days!"

Theological slaves of the RCG: Dennis Diehl (and I) want to make you free!!!

To the teens and adults of the non-Christian cult by the name of the Restored Church of God run by non other than cult leader and false prophet David Pack who masquerades as an Apostle of Jesus Christ, I ask you a question? Are you tired of the totalitarianism than you are being placed under? Are you sick of the fact that every aspect of your life is being govened, the way you dress, how you keep the Sabbath, what you read, write, think or even blog! Yes, it is a sin in the Restored Church of God for one to have a blog none other than for commercial purposes according to Pack crony and automaton Kevin Denee! It is the most dictatorial, theo-fascistic, totalistic article that has been ever written by the RCG. I felt like slamming the table over this evil propaganda not-so-cleverly-disguised as truth from God. As usual, with Armstrongism it is a utilitarian culture hates the arts and belittles people who divulge in it claiming "it is a waste of time" and not "character-building". That's why you'll find little or no actors, whether cinematic or live theatre, no painters like a Picaso or musicians (definately never rock) nor writers (like novelists, screenwriters, etc.) in the Restored Church of God or anyother Church of God splinter. I grew up in the WCG as a teenager in the 1980's, loved to write (and still do at 36) and faced some same hogwash by narrow-minded ministers and members who couldn't give two craps about the appreciation of imagining things and writing it down on paper. As the latest edition of Kingdom of Cults it was criticized that Herbert Armstrong's false mastepiece Mystery of the Ages read more of a science ficiton novel than one about theology. I guess Armstrongite leaders don't want competition though people write fiction and know it is fiction but fanatically believed that MOA is truth! Go figure! Banning anyone from using a blog is Armstrongism's latest assaults on the arts but there is good news. Dennis Diehl (and myself) want to make you free. The first step of freedom is reading Dennis' article at http://ezinearticles.com/?An-Open-Letter-to-the-Teens-in-the-Restored-Church-of-God&id=320190# . Free your mind and let your behind follow!

Intelligent quote of the day

You wrote: "I just wish some would live and let live and let it be. So simple but I know for some it is asking a lot. I say if one prefers worshipping on seventh-day, leave him alone. Sunday, leave him alone. No day, leave him alone. Any day, leave him alone. It is pure nonsense trying to bully one's point of view."

Wise words. :-)

Too bad there are some who spoil the peace that happens when people just respect each other and their differences.
Here's a present day example I do not think I have mentioned before. It is very recent. This does "burn" me because it happened to a really sweet person. It has to do with the harm that careless, judgemental remarks can make.
My friend in the WCG has just about had it and will probably move somewhere else soon. He has been a loyal, hard working supporter of the WCG for multiple decades. He did not fully accept the doctrinal changes but stayed and kept his views to himself. He is a quiet mild mannered individual. In order to celebrate the "days" he attended a splinter group but was not a regular attender there.
This year he attended the Feast with that group. Just before he was at WCG services. He had never told anyone he attended a splinter group for Holy Days but another longtime WCG member and "friend" knew somehow.
This "friend" when asking him what he was doing for the Festival actually with a fair amount of sarcasm called him a "Jew". My friend was so disgusted by this attitude that I doubt he will remain long at church.
Prejudice when it is tolerated can poison a group. This "friend" has made general comments like this before at church and I know personally that despite this being done in front of the members and ministers on two occasions it was not corrected or confronted.
I do not think it matters whether it is a Armstrong follower calling someone who celebrates Xmas a "pagan" or a supposedly "transformed" WCGer calling a traditionalist a "Jew", there is no room for either. That is very much against grace and everything a Christian should stand for.
I found this very upsetting. My dear friend is such a loving and kind person ... one of the most gentle souls I ever met. He did not deserve to be used in such a unChristian manner.

A missed opportunity of how the WCG should have been

Imagine this! If Herbert W. Armstrong was not into religion for the money but for true spirituality or how Joseph Tkach Jr. could have really reformed the Worldwide Church of God and could have spared a lot of heartache. Both men had and have their own plans (albeit petty, vindictive and narrow minded to say the least)to steamroll anyone else who got in the way. I am talking about Dr. Princess Esther Sellassie Antohin (granddaughter of none other than late Ethiopian Emperor Halle Sellassie) and her article from Dr. John Garr's magazine Restore discussing how the Ethiopian Orthodox Church is gospel centred while celebrating it's Hebraic heritage at the same time (Hey,late reggae singer Bob Marley converted to the Ethiopian Orthodox Church before his death! They are doing something right!). Log online to http://www.restorationfoundation.org/volume%2014/53_22.htm and enjoy! Sad that two men decidedly missed a great opportunity.

Intelligent Quote of the Day

“Humble my intellectual vanity.” Gack! What they mean is, “Don’t study so much, or you’ll end up knowing more than us ministers of God, and will be able to catch us when we’re wrong. Don’t read so much, or you might find out that our religion is a bucketful of coyote offal.”
No, studying and seeking truth, wanting to know hows and whys, wanting to understand, wanting to avoid error—that’s not intellectual vanity. It’s pursuing the proper end to which God has ordered the human mind. Ironically, it’s those who are threatened by education and intelligence, dismissing it as “vanity,” who are really the ones who suffer from intellectual vanity, because they are afraid they’ll be found to be wrong and will have their power and status questioned or undercut.

Koey Koala's Feast of Tabernacles message on how he keeps the festival

How do I keep the Feast of Tabernacles? I celebrate Christmas with the true meaning of the Feast of Tabernacles, not some stupid millennial speculation. I celebrate all of it, especially the bits that Armstrongites condemn from their legalistic prison cells. I celebrate it openly and unashamedly. I don't hide my Christmas lights under a bushel. I celebrate when God tabernacled with men through the one who was God with us. I celebrate the fact that when he tabernacled with us, he gave us the supreme example of perfect humanity, the humanity that Adam and Eve had before the fall. I celebrate the fact that God loved us so much that he tabernacled with us and suffered for us on the cross.
All those who are keeping the 2006 Feast of Tabernacles anywhere and everywhere starting tonight, "Chag Sameach!" ---Felix Taylor
